Spring Time Slouch Hat

I've been so busy with my kiddo and the sales working towards that goal, that I hadn't realized I hadn't released a pattern since the animal graphs! Though, in my defense... there were four patterns released at once then ;)

That realization did kick my butt into gear that now that we are having warmer weather, pretty much across the country, I need to get an in between hat ready! So... as an early release tonight (because I'm impatient to get it out and excited to share with you all) I present the Spring Time Slouch Hat:

10 Free Patterns - Sandals

As a mother of two wonderful children, I learned several years ago just how much I love baby feet. They are so tiny! When my daughter was born (she was my first) I would hold my thumb up against her tiny little foot and marvel at how her thumb was barely any larger then my thumb! And I have some small hands. Prior to her birth, when we got baby socks, my husband would obsessively stick them on his own thumb amazed that they would fit. We just couldn't believe feet could be so little! But they can be and size plays no role in how large of an impact those tiny little feet can make on your heart! 

Enjoy these free sandal patterns (don't worry, I threw in some patterns for mom too!)

1) Mary Jane Shoes by Lisa Auch - When I found these I knew they had to be in this round-up. The swirly little flower is so darn adorable and I could just picture my own daughter wearing them! They are absolutely adorable! 

2) Crochet Baby Sandal by Everything's Crochet - These little daisy looking sandals are so cute and so perfect for tiny female feet. What I like most about this pattern is that it achieves fashion without complicated stitches. Sometimes, simple is perfect! 

3) Crochet Baby Sandals by Ashlee Marie - Crochet shoes for little girls are typically an easy find so when I discovered these my first thought was how perfect they would be for my little man! They are cuter then anything I've found in the store and can be made in whatever color/material I choose. That is perfection! 

4) Crochet Baby Sandals by This Lovely Life - When doing my search for free sandal patterns, I right-clicked this pattern to open it in a new tab at least three times. These little shoes were everywhere and they caught my eye every single time they showed up. The conclusion was easy to come to. They must have a spot in this round up! They are simple, they are high in fashion and they are adorable. Plus pink. They are also pink. ;) 

5) Baby Button Gladiator Sandals by Whistle & Ivy - The unique name that goes along with these sandals is absolutely perfect because they are absolutely unique! And the name is gender neutral because if not for the pink, these sandals could easily adorn the feet of a mighty little warrior boy! I'm thinking brown with grey buttons for a little man, perhaps? 

6) The Granny Triangle Flip Flop by The Oxford Family - After all of the patterns involving baby feet, I had to break it up with something for mom. I don't want to give everyone baby fever, after all ;) These flip flops are perfect and practical. Take the soles of some cheapie flip flops from Wal-Mart and turn them into so much more! 

7) Stripes Boy Sandals by Emi Herrington - These little shoes come in sizes from baby all the way to adult. There is a perfect fit for everyone in the family! These shoes are practical, can be made color specific or in colors that will match any outfit! They are what you can call "perfect". hehe Oh and they come as a FREE ravelry download!

8) Baby Crochet Sandals by "the difference is in the details" - These little shoes remind me of the beach, water and sand. I can only assume because of the brilliant use of colors in this image. These little shoes look so "ocean" and "sand" like, it isn't funny. Like, I wish I lived near a beach (that had water) just so I could make some and put them on my child! I specify a beach with water because for most of my life I lived near the largest beach ever and it had absolutely no water. Well, on the surface. Check out the White Sands and your mind will be blown by the beauty! 

9) Flower Power Baby Sandals by - Lovely Little Life - What make me so happy about these sandals is just how much they scream "spring" and "summer" at the same time. We have the green, the red and the adorable baby foot. Again, perfection! Gosh, just look at those little toes!! 

10) Baby Rainbow Sandals by is it a toy - I love bright colors that are also simple. It gives this complicated look that is actually super easy. The criss-cross pattern these shoes have are unique and fun!

Annnnd just because I feel that I left the adults out to much... enjoy this wonderful antique shoe design for mom!

Hook: H 

Material: Red Heart Shimmer

Gauge:  8 dc rows = 3” & 3 dc stitches = 1”

Hints & Tips:

-          Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stich anywhere in the pattern

-          Color A is the color of the strips, color B is the color between the strips, so in my images, the grey is color A and  the blue is color B.

-          Image to help understand where to place the stitches when increasing at the bottom, after the entire pattern instructions.

-          If you use a cotton yarn, use an F hook to get your gauge right and don’t do as many rows as the material will make it a little longer. You’ll need to measure your project as you go to accommodate the different material. (Cotton such as peaches and cream)

-          If you use a yarn like Red Heart Super Saver or I Love This Yarn you should be able to match the gauge by decreasing to a G hook, but make sure you check your work as you go if you do use a different material then that listed.

-          If you do not have Red Heart Shimmer, you can also get away with using another type of baby weight type yarn. The material says it is a weight 4 but I find it to be thin in comparison to the Red Heart Super Saver which also says 4.

-          When your gauge is off, try using a smaller or larger hook and measuring your project again.

-          The listed gauge is specific to the hat. I measured a finished hat to get the gauge.
-     I strongly suggest you use the listed material with this hat as other materials did alter the size in testing. If you do use alternate sizes be sure that you check the gauge. :)

Springtime Showers Sun Hat

Hints & Tips:

-          Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stitch in any round

-          Join the last st to the first st with a sl st in every round

-          Use any color arrangement you want! Rainbow colors are just one variations that would be perfect for it.

-          Complete brim by following surface slip stitch technique (here is a tutorial) in every round of the brim doing the color pattern you created backwards (so I ended with purple as a row and started with purple towards the base of the hat, please see picture to see what I mean.

-          If your gauge doesn’t match up or your hat size doesn’t come out right, try altering your hook size to make the hat larger or smaller.

Hints & Tips:

-          Ch 1 does not count as a st

-          There will be a sc outlined by a line on top and bottom, bring the fold up to here and pin it with the flower by using the ends from the flower to tie it to the hat.

-          Flower instructions at very bottom – same for every size

-          Toddler instructions and young child/teenager instructions are the same except for the hook size

-          To create a larger flower, increase your hook size. I used the F hook for the young child/teen hat but an H hook for the adult hat.

-     Cute little story about the snow in the pictures and my daughter after the flower instructions
-     This hat is VERY stretchy which is partially what makes it fit so well for so many other sizes by just altering the hook size. Gauge is for the hat and is for dc rounds which might seem confusing. Using the adult size as an example, the 3 rows = 1 inch does seem small but it's beacuse of the front loop and then back loop technique used that makes the hat so stretchy. This gauge would not get a hat to fit on an adult head if worked without that technique. I hope this helps clear up any gauge confusion! :)

First round of petals:  Working in first sc of center (you normally would join here but did not) – *sc, hdc, 

dc, hdc, sc all in same st, sk next st*around, do not join (you’ll have five petals

Second round of petals: Working behind first round of petals, ch 1, insert hook into the back loop of the first st you skipped (it will not have anything worked in it) – *sc, hdc, dc, trpc, dc, hdc, sc, skip next st* around, join to a loop somewhere at the bottom of the first petal and tie off. Straighten flower petals up a bit and then trim loose ends – I left two loose ends so I could tie the flower to the hat instead of sewing it. 

Despite being in the mid 70s when I designed these hats, it snowed all day yesterday (as you can see in the photos of the hats). Well, while I was taking the pictures my daughter decided to play in some of the snow on the porch, which was fine. As I'm finishing the photos she runs to the door, steps in the house and says very urgently "come in right now and fix my hands!" Her hands were red from the cold of the snow. My husband and I tell her that we will come in, in just one second to warm them up. She runs away screaming (with a TON of passion in her voice) "what am I going to do!!??" So we came inside and snuggled her into the couch and wrapped her up in the very first baby blanket I ever made her... and the very first baby blanket I ever made! 

Cherry Blossom Backpack

Hook: E, H & I

Materials: Red Heart Super Saver (light blue, light pink and off white), 6/0 seed beads (dark pink), hot glue, yarn sewing needle

Gauge: Non-essential – a larger hook creates a larger backpack and vice versa  

Hints & Tips:

-          Beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch anywhere in the pattern

-     Instructions for a larger size at the bottom

Abbreviations:

-          Ch – chain

-          Hdc – half double crochet

-          Sl st – slip stitch

-          St – stitch

-          Dc – double crochet

-          Sc – single crochet

-          Trc – triple (or treble) crochet

Bag (with I hook):

Round 1) Ch 7, 4 hdc in 3^rd ch from hook (ch 2 counts as first hdc), hdc in next 3 ch, 5 hdc in last ch, 3 hdc on other side, join to ch 2 with sl st – 16 hdc

Round 2) Ch 1, 2 hdc in next 5 st, hdc in next 3 st, 2 hdc in next 5 st, hdc in last 3 st, join to first hdc with sl st – 26 hdc

Weave chain in and out of ch 1 spaces ending in the same space you started the chain in. (You can make this step shorter so you don't have long of a chain when you pull it tight, that is up to you. 

Straps (with H hook & make 2):

Row 1) Ch 4, sc in 2^nd ch from hook, sc to end – 3 sc

Row 2 - 55) Ch 1, sc in every st across – 3 sc

Flowers (With E hook & make 13):

Round 1) Using magic circle, ch 1, 5 sc in circle, pull tight, join to first sc with sl st – 5 sc

Round 2) *Ch 1, dc, trc, dc in same st as joining, sl st into next st*around, sl st into first st, tie off – 5 petals

Trunk/Branches (With I hook):
With two strands, ch 35, drop one loop from your hook and ch 11, drop that loop off your hook, go back to first dropped loop and ch 14 with it as well. Tie off both strands. Make two more of these.

Twist the 3 trunks together to form a thicker truck. The branches will be secured under flowers after you have the trunk positioned onto the back pack.

Putting it all together:

You can sew everything on or use hot glue (I went the hot glue route do to it being easier).

Flowers: You are going to put the flowers upside down so the WRONG side will be visible. Using hot glue, glue a group of darker pink beads into the center of each one. I went with three different types of beads for appearance.

Bag positioning: Using the bottom of your bag, flatten it to where it is long ways.

Trunk: Take the three pieces of your trunk. You’re going to wrap them around one another and place them on the bag. I glued them as I wrapped them because it made it easier to visualize how the trunk was turning out. I would only glue every couple of inches though so I could manipulate the trunk pieces to perfect after it was in place. I wanted my trunk to come up from the bottom and up along the side, but not directly on the fold so that a few branches could curl around but most of the tree/flowers would be visible on one side.

Branches: Scatter your branches where you want them/think they look right.

Flowers (again): Put glue on the flower (unless you’re sewing them) and place it on a branch locking the branch in place via the flower. Once all flowers are placed (I used 12 of them) check to make sure all branches are secure. If not use a little more thread/glue.

Adjustable chain: Glue a flower at the end of the chain that opens and closes the backpack. This will keep it from every sliding out. If you want to still be able to slide it out, I suggest modifying the flower and sewing a button to the chain so the button can allow the flower to be put on and off.

Straps: Flip backpack over, line up where you want the straps and sew them into place securely. 

I'm sharing this extra photo just because of how much I love it. Lol my daughter is the perfect little model :p

***Instructions to make a larger bag - Increase the ch by 2 so that you'll have 5 hdc between each half circle end instead of 3, add an extra increase round and then add a few more hdc rounds to make it longer. Make the straps as long as needed.***
