Springtime Showers Sun Hat

Hints & Tips:
-          Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stitch in any round
-          Join the last st to the first st with a sl st in every round
-          Use any color arrangement you want! Rainbow colors are just one variations that would be perfect for it.
-          Complete brim by following surface slip stitch technique (here is a tutorial) in every round of the brim doing the color pattern you created backwards (so I ended with purple as a row and started with purple towards the base of the hat, please see picture to see what I mean.
-          If your gauge doesn’t match up or your hat size doesn’t come out right, try altering your hook size to make the hat larger or smaller.

"It's not easy to hear the news that your child has autism, and realize that your life will be utterly different than you had expected it to be. Daily life with a special-needs child presents many unique challenges. You are never prepared for a diagnosis of autism. It is likely that you will experience a range of emtiotions. It is painful to love so much, to want something to much and not quite get it. You want your child to get better so much you may feel some of the stages commonly associated with grieving. You may "revisit" these feelings from time to time in the future. Part of moving forward, is dealing with your own needs and emotions along the way." - Autism Speaks

Autism affects 1 in 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls. Saying that it affects us all doesn't come close to explaining why autism is something we should all be aware of. Despite how prevalent autism is in our society there are many misconceptions about it. here is a wonderful article written by Lisa Quinones-Fontanez at parents.com titled No Need to be Sorry and Other Things You Should Not Say to an Autism Parent.

Education is everything. The more you know, the better you can do. Below are some links to different sources about autism. I urge you to click them, read them and help us spread the word.

April is Autism Awareness month. In honor of that, MNE Crafts & Stitched After Dark have joined forces to design four different Autism Awareness hats! What better way to spread the word then with fashion? And why are we doing this in mid-March? So the winner has time to make these beautiful hats before April arrives!!

Please follow the steps below to enter the giveaway and please leave a comment on why raising awareness to Autism is important to you.

***Thank you all for entering the giveaway! We have a few more days to go, so please make sure and share this link with anyone and everyone! Our goal is to spread awareness to Autism with beautiful fashion!. That can happen by all of us working together and sharing this link with our friends and family! And please follow my blog so you can easily see the who the winners are and see when the book with these patterns is released (there will even be free copies released!)

Round 25) Ch 1, *sc in first 6 st, 2 sc in next st* around, join to first sc with sl st

Bow Tie
Row 1) Ch 21, sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st across in back loops only– 20 st

Row 2) Ch 1, sl st in every st across in back loops only from here on out –20 st

Row 3 – 15) Repeat round 2 for a total of 15 rows and then tie off– 20 st

Should measure 4.5” wide by 2” long.

Take a piece of string and thread through center two stitches on top and bottom of bow and then tie together. This will help with positioning.

Center piece of tie
Row 1) (Leave a tail long enough to stitch with) Ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and to end in back loops only – 3 st

Row 2-15) Ch 1, sl st across for a total of 15 rows
should measure almost 2” long and 1” wide.

Sew two ends together with tail and slide over bow until it is over the center.

The piece that goes around the neck
Row 1) Ch 61, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and all the way across (back loop only) – 60 st

Thread through back of bow center piece.
Add Velcro to make adjustable. You will need a several inches of Velcro so it will be able to get tight enough. It is supposed to dangle off of the babies neck and not actually be around it in the traditional style. You can shorten the ch by 10-15 ch to shorten if you desire.
I used hot glue to secure the cord to the center of the bow and the Velcro.

Stretchy piece for specific sizes:

With red
Row 1) Ch 3, sl st in back loop of first 2 ch – 2 sl st

Row 2) Ch 1, sl st in back loop to end – 2 sl st

Row 3 – desired length) Repeat row 2

Sew both ends to each other to make a band, do not twist.

*** You will need to measure the head of the person you are making this for. This is VERY stretchy so I recommend making it 1-2 inches shorter than the head measurement. The hat will fit almost any size head past 12 months up to a toddler of 3-4. This band is what makes it adjustable. On smaller heads it would actually appear to be to big but this band which is barely visible as it blends in with the bottom round of red holds it perfect to babies heads!

Shamrock Beanie

Hook: I
Material: Red Heart Super Saver OR I Love This Yarn
Gauge: 7 St & 5 Rows = 2”
Hints & Tips:
-          Be sure you utilize the images when transitioning between the leaves of the shamrock. If you do not do this step, the green will merge together and you will not be able to tell what the shape on the hat is. - images at bottom
-          The bottom two leaves ARE different then the top. I had to do this so the indent space wasn’t to large. You are not making a mistake if the leaves look slightly different. The bottom ones aren’t not symmetrical with themselves though they are with one another.

This photo is an example of changing from a side green leaf to the brown that goes between the leaves. As you can see my hook is not only through the next st to do the fpdc but also through the bottom loops of the green stitch I just completed. This will force those green colors together and put the brown between them.

This is after I've started working the front post stitch. as you can see it pushes the two green stitches together and places the brown perfectly between. We want the two brown stitches to touch, not the green.

Here is the end result. If you look near the bottom of the photo where the diagnol line of brown starts you can see where I didn't do this and the green touched. It will ruin the entire project. This step is essential!

I did not have to do this step on the second from green to brown back to green, just the first time because of the way the stithces are angled but if you see the problem that you see at the bottom of the last image happening, go ahead and do this step any time you have just the one sc of brown between the green.

The All Boy Hat

Hook: I
Material: Red Heart Super Saver OR I Love This Yarn
Gauge: 7 St & 5 Rows = 2”

A – Blue – main
B – Red – truck
C – Grey - window
D – Black – door handle/tires

Abbreviations
-          Ch – chain
-          Dc – double crochet
-          Sl st – slip stitch
-          Fpdc – front post double crochet
-          St – stitch

Helpful Hints & Tips:
-          If the color changes are far apart (like when you are working on the main body of the truck), cut the yarn leaving about 2-3 inches of tail so you can tie them and trim them after you are done.
-          If the color changes are close together (like at the start of the truck) carry the yarn along behind you, I did not fpdc around it, I just carried it (not to tight) and started up with it again when I needed it.
-          I use the word “around” when talking about the fpdc. This is because a fpdc goes around a stitch, not through the loops.
