Over a year ago, I ended up down this crochet journey with a whole different graphing technique that finally has landed me here... graph booties! The very first graph hat I ever did was named "The Emy's Beanie" after my daughter, because she was the sole inspiration behind it. I am again using that name with this new line of booties...

So first, I'm going to give you all the info regarding the pattern and then I'm going to share the update regarding my son as I know several of you have been following our story. But first? My name is The Emy's Beanie. I was originally crocheted (though I do look knit don't I?) in early February of 2014. I may not be very old but I am very experienced in what I do best!

I happen to be pink but I have many brothers and sisters who are blue, grey, purple or red! The heart on my side is a key aspect to my personality. I'm vivid, loving, bright and very squishy. Think of the movie Frozen... yeah, if I'd been on Anna's head while she searched for Elsa she would have been good to go (and in style I might add). My ribbed look is more than just my style but is also what makes me stretchy. Everyone loves a stretchy hat... just admit it. ;)

Unlike Olaf, I'm not particularly fond of the sun, fire (eek, that would just end badly) or warm weather in general. I prefer the snow, a hill and a sled that will cause snow to hit me from all angles! It makes me feel so alive!! The cold air... so fresh, so crisp... so perfect! Yep, winter is definitely my preference. I don't even really mind fires if there is snow near by! Sledding isn't my only interest. I also love horse back riding. Hair poking out from under me, mounts all around and the soft "clip clop" as the horse slowly walks around (or runs... that's fun too).

Having been sized for a Toddler, I imagine my future will take me to a closet and storage until the day where I get to reside on my beautiful owner's own little girl's head. See, my creator made me for her daughter and I feel (and hope) in my heart that I will stay in this family and one day my creator will see me on her granddaughter's head! It may seem like some high hopes but I am a very special hat and you can never dream, dreams that are to big!

Easter Symbols Hat

This hat holds a special place in my heart because there isn't much more I could stick on a hat that would symbolize just what Easter represents. These symbols, while not known widely yet, are some that many hold dear to their heart. A simple google search can show just how many were impacted by the meaning of these symbols as they tattooed them on their body. 

You can click to enlarge the image so you can read the sybols meanings at the bottom or you can read them here. The first arrow, pointing down symbolizes Jesus coming to Earth. The cross signifies his death. The tombstone symbolizes that he arose. Shortly after he arose from the dead, he ascended into heaven which is the upward arrow. We end this set of symbols with a second downward symbol which, in my opinion symbolizes one of the most miraculous things of all. Jesus is coming again. 

I learned about Salvation when I was just a child. I chose to be saved when I was hardly eight years old. And I have walked the rocky path of faith since. Before choosing to be saved by our Lord, I had no doubt and it was that lack of doubt that helps to fuel my overwhelmed adult mind now. As a child I questioned everything. I loved proof. Despite requiring that for every other bit of information given to me as a child, I never demanded proof of Jesus. Upon a lot of reflection I realized I had never doubted Jesus Christ because as a child going through much abuse and the horrible foster care system I never felt alone and always felt his comfort. I was going through things as a toddler and young child that I had no control over and so He did what he could to comfort me, show me what love was and teach me how to love. I credit him for getting me through my toughest battle in life. And He will get you through yours too!

***While most of my hats are an easy level this one is an intermediate level due to the color changes and technique required to achieve the look.***

Here is the graph if the instructions seem a bit more challenging to follow. you'll be working from the top down. 

To create the thin lines in this hat that make up the symbols you have to use this technique so that the colors don't cross over into eachother. The stitch before your color change to B will have 2 loops at the bottom. Go through them BEFORE going through your next st to creat the next fpdc like shown above. 

This is what your next step will look like after you've gone through the next st with your color change. 

This is what it will look like upon completion. If you look at the two green stitches at the bottom you can see how they touch and seperate the brown st at the bottom of the picture and the next brown stitch but that problem doesn't happen with the next 3 brown stitches. In the hat, the brown stitches will be how you want your stitches in this hat to look.

Autism affects 1 in 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls. Saying that it affects us all doesn't come close to explaining why autism is something we should all be aware of. Hints & Tips:

-          Be sure you utilize the images when transitioning between the leaves of the shamrock. If you do not do this step, the green will merge together and you will not be able to tell what the shape on the hat is. - images at bottom

-          The bottom two leaves ARE different then the top. I had to do this so the indent space wasn’t to large. You are not making a mistake if the leaves look slightly different. The bottom ones aren’t not symmetrical with themselves though they are with one another.

This photo is an example of changing from a side green leaf to the brown that goes between the leaves. As you can see my hook is not only through the next st to do the fpdc but also through the bottom loops of the green stitch I just completed. This will force those green colors together and put the brown between them. 

This is after I've started working the front post stitch. as you can see it pushes the two green stitches together and places the brown perfectly between. We want the two brown stitches to touch, not the green.

Here is the end result.If you look near the bottom of the photo where the diagnol line of brown starts you can see where I didn't do this and the green touched. It will ruin the entire project. This step is essential! 

I did not have to do this step on the second from green to brown back to green, just the first time because of the way the stithces are angled but if you see the problem that you see at the bottom of the last image happening, go ahead and do this step any time you have just the one sc of brown between the green. 

Finally Settling In!

A year and a half ago, my husband lost his job and we lost our home. A week ago (today actually) we got a new home and moved in. And today, we are mostly settled in. It is beyond awesome. I even made it official by designing not just ONE new pattern but TWO. Both can be found in the two posts before this one.

Anyways, the main point of this post is to give my viewers something to look forward to! The Emy Beanie, which I designed for my daughter because of Valentine's Day coming up, has been a pretty big hit! In the middle of working on other designs I plan on also designing this style of hat with all of the letters in the alphabet, a car, some animals and possibly more!

It's a delightful hat! It is squishy and warm and images work so well in the hat!

Helpful Hints & Tips:

-          If the color changes are far apart (like when you are working on the main body of the truck), cut the yarn leaving about 2-3 inches of tail so you can tie them and trim them after you are done.

-          If the color changes are close together (like at the start of the truck) carry the yarn along behind you, I did not fpdc around it, I just carried it (not to tight) and started up with it again when I needed it.

-          I use the word “around” when talking about the fpdc. This is because a fpdc goes around a stitch, not through the loops.

By popular request:
To size for an adult take the toddler beanie and increase two extra row so you are working with 70 st in each round. You will achieve this by fpdc around 4 and then 2 fpdc around next. Then increase again by fpdc around 4 and then 2 fpdc around next.

To size for a teen follow the above directions but only increase once to get 60.

For those of you sizing for younger than 6 month there is another blog below this one on my main feed. They are Emy's leg warmers and the heart is smaller. You can use the instructions for that heart. To size I would suggest using the toddler instructions but only increase to 40 st and remove a row before you start the heart.
