Summer Beanies - 10 Free Patterns

This round-up is dedicated to a dear friend of mine whose mother has been going through one touch battle with cancer. She asked if I knew any beanies that had a "doily" type make to them and I found several! I was going to do market bags but this round up just made more sense to me at the time. I hope you all enjoy them :) Just click on the image to go to the pattern.

1)
This beautiful pattern is very breathable and perfect, not only for summer but spring and fall as well! It will give you some shade, not make your head hot (due to the holes) and it is very stylish!

2)
This hat is a stretchy hat, I can just tell by looking at the stitch. I love it! Like the first one, it will breath with ease and provide great shade! What a fantastic design!

3)
This downloadable pattern is so unique! When I saw it, I knew I had to add it. The designer of this is very creative and came up with one stylish hat!

4)
This hat is perfectly dainty and has the perfect flower on it (though I'm sure it would look great with all sorts of flowers on it!)

5)
This delightful slouch beanie is quite a bit like a doily in its design and perfect for summer do the its "holey" nature" hehe

6)
This pattern is similar (and yet so different) to the previous one in that it uses a chain to create its look. Beautiful isn't it?

7)
This hat is so dainty! It is whispering summer.... sand.... sun... water... at me LOL It just makes me want to go to the beach! Anyone who wears this hat is sure to look stunning.

8)
EDIT: This hat is not free. When I found it, it was under the free portion in ravelry but I was mistaken. I am sorry!! Try this hat instead!:Chameleon Hat
Before I realized the name of this hat (don't ask me how I missed it, I don't know) all I could think was how FUN this hat was. The designer definitely gave it the perfect name!

9)
When this designer first released this hat I loved it. Now I have the perfect reason to add it to this round up... because it fits perfectly! The star on the top definitely gives it a "doily" look, wouldn't you say?

10)
This last pattern is one of my very own and remains one of my most popular patterns! It is very stretchy (don't let its small size fool you!) and completely decorative. as well as "holey" due to the stretch!

Vintage Tulip Sun Hat

Hook: H
Material: Red Heart Shimmer
Gauge:  8 dc rows = 3” & 3 dc stitches = 1”

Hints & Tips:
-          Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stich anywhere in the pattern
-          Color A is the color of the strips, color B is the color between the strips, so in my images, the grey is color A and  the blue is color B.
-          Image to help understand where to place the stitches when increasing at the bottom, after the entire pattern instructions.
-          If you use a cotton yarn, use an F hook to get your gauge right and don’t do as many rows as the material will make it a little longer. You’ll need to measure your project as you go to accommodate the different material. (Cotton such as peaches and cream)
-          If you use a yarn like Red Heart Super Saver or I Love This Yarn you should be able to match the gauge by decreasing to a G hook, but make sure you check your work as you go if you do use a different material then that listed.
-          If you do not have Red Heart Shimmer, you can also get away with using another type of baby weight type yarn. The material says it is a weight 4 but I find it to be thin in comparison to the Red Heart Super Saver which also says 4.
-          When your gauge is off, try using a smaller or larger hook and measuring your project again.
-          The listed gauge is specific to the hat. I measured a finished hat to get the gauge.
-     I strongly suggest you use the listed material with this hat as other materials did alter the size in testing. If you do use alternate sizes be sure that you check the gauge. :)

Summer Couture Sun Hat

Did you know there is now a WINTER version of this hat?? Check it out HERE.

Material: Vanna’s Choice

Hints & Tips:
-          Ch 1 does not count as a st
-          There will be a sc outlined by a line on top and bottom, bring the fold up to here and pin it with the flower by using the ends from the flower to tie it to the hat.
-          Flower instructions at very bottom – same for every size
-          Toddler instructions and young child/teenager instructions are the same except for the hook size
-          To create a larger flower, increase your hook size. I used the F hook for the young child/teen hat but an H hook for the adult hat.
-     Cute little story about the snow in the pictures and my daughter after the flower instructions
-     This hat is VERY stretchy which is partially what makes it fit so well for so many other sizes by just altering the hook size. Gauge is for the hat and is for dc rounds which might seem confusing. Using the adult size as an example, the 3 rows = 1 inch does seem small but it's beacuse of the front loop and then back loop technique used that makes the hat so stretchy. This gauge would not get a hat to fit on an adult head if worked without that technique. I hope this helps clear up any gauge confusion! :)

Flower: with F hook
Center: Using magic circle, ch 1, 10 sc in circle changing to second color in last st, pull tight (no joining)

First round of petals:  Working in first sc of center (you normally would join here but did not) – *sc, hdc,
dc, hdc, sc all in same st, sk next st*around, do not join (you’ll have five petals

Second round of petals: Working behind first round of petals, ch 1, insert hook into the back loop of the first st you skipped (it will not have anything worked in it) – *sc, hdc, dc, trpc, dc, hdc, sc, skip next st* around, join to a loop somewhere at the bottom of the first petal and tie off. Straighten flower petals up a bit and then trim loose ends – I left two loose ends so I could tie the flower to the hat instead of sewing it.

Despite being in the mid 70s when I designed these hats, it snowed all day yesterday (as you can see in the photos of the hats). Well, while I was taking the pictures my daughter decided to play in some of the snow on the porch, which was fine. As I'm finishing the photos she runs to the door, steps in the house and says very urgently "come in right now and fix my hands!" Her hands were red from the cold of the snow. My husband and I tell her that we will come in, in just one second to warm them up. She runs away screaming (with a TON of passion in her voice) "what am I going to do!!??" So we came inside and snuggled her into the couch and wrapped her up in the very first baby blanket I ever made her... and the very first baby blanket I ever made!

"It's not easy to hear the news that your child has autism, and realize that your life will be utterly different than you had expected it to be. Daily life with a special-needs child presents many unique challenges. You are never prepared for a diagnosis of autism. It is likely that you will experience a range of emtiotions. It is painful to love so much, to want something to much and not quite get it. You want your child to get better so much you may feel some of the stages commonly associated with grieving. You may "revisit" these feelings from time to time in the future. Part of moving forward, is dealing with your own needs and emotions along the way." - Autism Speaks

Autism affects 1 in 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls. Saying that it affects us all doesn't come close to explaining why autism is something we should all be aware of. Despite how prevalent autism is in our society there are many misconceptions about it. here is a wonderful article written by Lisa Quinones-Fontanez at parents.com titled No Need to be Sorry and Other Things You Should Not Say to an Autism Parent.

Education is everything. The more you know, the better you can do. Below are some links to different sources about autism. I urge you to click them, read them and help us spread the word.

April is Autism Awareness month. In honor of that, MNE Crafts & Stitched After Dark have joined forces to design four different Autism Awareness hats! What better way to spread the word then with fashion? And why are we doing this in mid-March? So the winner has time to make these beautiful hats before April arrives!!

Please follow the steps below to enter the giveaway and please leave a comment on why raising awareness to Autism is important to you.

***Thank you all for entering the giveaway! We have a few more days to go, so please make sure and share this link with anyone and everyone! Our goal is to spread awareness to Autism with beautiful fashion!. That can happen by all of us working together and sharing this link with our friends and family! And please follow my blog so you can easily see the who the winners are and see when the book with these patterns is released (there will even be free copies released!)

"For the Love of Pi" Slouchy Beanie

Hook: I
Materials: Red Heart Super Saver
Gauge: 3 trc & 1 trc row = 1 inch
Length: 11” (add an extra repeat of round 5 and 6 for 13”/extra slouchy)
Size: Teen & Adult (depending on tension)

Hints & Tips:
-          The optional increases are for those with a tighter tension. I don’t need the optional increases to make the hat large enough to fit but for others, the regular instructions size perfect for a pre-teen/teen head. You will need to ignore the 48 stitch count after you do the two optional rows and make sure your count stays at 60.
-          The optional increases will throw off your color changes; you’ll need to do the opposite of the rest of the pattern if you do the optional increases.
-          If you do the optional increase 1 you must do the optional increase 2.
-          Chain stitches at the beginning of each round do not count as a stitch

Abbreviations:
-          Ch – chain
-          Trc – treble (or triple) crochet
-          Sl st – slip stitch
-          Bptrc – back post treble (or triple) crochet
-          Dc – double crochet
-          St – stitch
-          Bphdc – back post half double crochet
-          Fphdc – front post half double crochet

With color A:
Using Magic Circle
Round 1) Ch 3, 12 trc, join to first trc with sl st, change to color B – 12 trc

Round 2) Ch 3, 2 bptrc around every st, join to first st with sl st – 24 bptrc

Shamrock Beanie

Hook: I
Material: Red Heart Super Saver OR I Love This Yarn
Gauge: 7 St & 5 Rows = 2”
Hints & Tips:
-          Be sure you utilize the images when transitioning between the leaves of the shamrock. If you do not do this step, the green will merge together and you will not be able to tell what the shape on the hat is. - images at bottom
-          The bottom two leaves ARE different then the top. I had to do this so the indent space wasn’t to large. You are not making a mistake if the leaves look slightly different. The bottom ones aren’t not symmetrical with themselves though they are with one another.

This photo is an example of changing from a side green leaf to the brown that goes between the leaves. As you can see my hook is not only through the next st to do the fpdc but also through the bottom loops of the green stitch I just completed. This will force those green colors together and put the brown between them.

This is after I've started working the front post stitch. as you can see it pushes the two green stitches together and places the brown perfectly between. We want the two brown stitches to touch, not the green.

Here is the end result. If you look near the bottom of the photo where the diagnol line of brown starts you can see where I didn't do this and the green touched. It will ruin the entire project. This step is essential!

I did not have to do this step on the second from green to brown back to green, just the first time because of the way the stithces are angled but if you see the problem that you see at the bottom of the last image happening, go ahead and do this step any time you have just the one sc of brown between the green.

Butterfly Beanie

Hook: I
Material: Red Heart
Gauge: 2 rows = 1 inch

Abbreviations:
-          Ch – chain
-          Sc – single crochet
-          St – stitch
-          Dc – double crochet
-          YO – Yarn over

Special stitches:
-          Puff stitch  – *YO, place hook in stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through first two loops on hook* repeat three times (so you’ll have three half completed double crochets on your hook), YO and pull through all loops on hook – It’s like doing 3 dc dec all in the same stitch!

Helpful Hints & Tips
-          When working the mirrored round, count your stitches because it is easy to think you are putting the stitch in the wrong place. You want 6 st (or however many are indicated for your size) between each butterfly, a wing, a sc and then a wing all directly across from one another.
-          Use the pictures at the bottom to help with the butterfly body. When I say go through the top loop you will go all the way through. You place your hook between the front and back loop, draw up a loop from behind the butterfly so it completely wraps around the sc between the wings. Then you will go under the entire st as if it isn’t even there and do a dc and then you’ll slip your hook between the front and back loop again like you did in the start. Hopefully the pictures help with this! This makes it where the body stays tightly together and won’t move around because it is locked through that stitch.
-          The 0-3 month might stretch to fit 6 months as well. I do not have a baby that young and couldn’t for sure test that. The second size fit my one year old son as well as my three year old daughter. It didn’t look loose on my son or tight on my daughter which was perfect!
-          In the larger size, there is an additional butterfly and some left over sc. Between all of the butterflies but TWO there will be 6 sc. In the last one there are a few extra. This is not a mistake, it is just the back of the hat.
-    This pattern does require that you work up from the bottom and decrease once you reach the top rather than working from the top and going down. The last decrease (12 decreases) is challenging but can be done!

Size: 0-3 Months

Edging
With A

Round 1) Ch 37, sc in 2nd ch from hook,* change to B, puff st in next st, , 1 sc in next st,  puff st in next st, change to A, sc in next 6 st* repeat until end, tie off – 4 butterflies, 24 sc

Round 1) Ch 49, sc in 2nd ch from hook,* change to B,  puff st in next st, 1 sc in next st,  puff st in next st, change to A, sc in next 6 st* repeat until you reach the last butterfly, sc in last 8 st, tie off – 5 butterflies, 33 sc

Mirrored Round) Join with A on the opposite side of the chain. You will follow the same instructions as round 1, mirroring the first row on the opposite side EXCEPT you will start at the very last st of the previous round

With A – join on the same side as round 1, not the mirrored side

Round 1) Join, ch 1, sc in first st, *Change to C, skip ½ cluster st, double crochet through front loop of mirrored round, double crochet over entire middle stitch (the stitch between the wings), dc over the front loop of middle stitch (again), skip wing stitch again, Change to A, sc in next 6 st*join to first sc with sl st – 48 st

Round 9) Ch 2, dc dec over next 12 st, join top of ch 2, tie off, cut and pull piece through to inside of hat, tie double knot to keep secure  – 1 dc

Tie and trim loose ends.

This is the first st. As you can see, I went in between the front and back loops and pulled the yarn up from behind the butterfly.

In this photo, I am doing the 2nd dc and am going under the entire st. The third st will be done by repeating the first image. you may have to kind of scooth the first two stitches over to see the st.

The All Boy Hat

Hook: I
Material: Red Heart Super Saver OR I Love This Yarn
Gauge: 7 St & 5 Rows = 2”

A – Blue – main
B – Red – truck
C – Grey - window
D – Black – door handle/tires

Abbreviations
-          Ch – chain
-          Dc – double crochet
-          Sl st – slip stitch
-          Fpdc – front post double crochet
-          St – stitch

Helpful Hints & Tips:
-          If the color changes are far apart (like when you are working on the main body of the truck), cut the yarn leaving about 2-3 inches of tail so you can tie them and trim them after you are done.
-          If the color changes are close together (like at the start of the truck) carry the yarn along behind you, I did not fpdc around it, I just carried it (not to tight) and started up with it again when I needed it.
-          I use the word “around” when talking about the fpdc. This is because a fpdc goes around a stitch, not through the loops.
