Braids & Cables Beanie & Cowl Set

I'm going to release a pattern early today... and it is officially the FIRST free crochet pattern I'm listing that uses the Battle of the Stitches Round 3 stitch! This pattern is easy to figure out and works up quickly. A link to a tutorial video is provided below and the hints & tips section will give you some extra help too!

Hook: J
Material: Red Heart with Love
Gauge: 3 dc & 2 rounds (1 sc + 1 dc) = 1”

Hints & Tips:
-          The sc round gets skipped over when working the front post stitches. You can see a tutorial video HERE.
-          The cowl/scarf is designed to be approximately 72” long at the gauge written. The gauge isn’t super important with the cowl unless you want it to be the same size as the one in the photo taken. The gauge IS important with the hat.
-          When measuring the cowl’s gauge, I stretched it out to its normal length. The cables make it seem a little “tighter” than it is and made a sc and dc round right under an inch. Once I stretched it out a bit, it fit the gauge I wrote which is the same gauge as the hat.
-          The hat is designed to be unisex. I did not add a pom-pom to the one in the photo but that is an excellent option!
-          The hat is a little tricky. Round 4 has less stitches than round 3 and this might throw you off. It is correct. The reason being the cable stitches are worked OVER round 3 and into round 2. Round 3’s increases are just used as a filler round and to increase the hat size. The stitch counts are correct.
-     This pattern is sized in adult only.

Special Stitches:
-          Braid - BR – sk next st, fptrc in each of next 2 sts, working in front of last 2 sts, fptrc in skipped st
-          Front Post Triple Crochet – fptrc – YO 2x, insert hook around post of specified st (the post will be towards the front of the hook, not behind it) and draw up a loop, *YO and throw through 2 loops on hook* 3 times

Abbreviations/stitches:
-          Ch – chain
-          Dc – double crochet
-          Sl st – slip stitch
-          Fpdc – front post double crochet
-          St – stitch
-          Sc – single crochet
-          Bpdc – back post double crochet
-          BR – braid
-          Fptrc – front post triple/treble crochet

  3. Thank you, this is lovely. Do you have any idea how much yarn is used separately in the hat and cowl. I would like to use a different yarn. How much would I need?

    1. I don't have exact yardage but I know the entire thing took me less than 2 skeins. So I'd say have 1 full skein on hand for the cowl and the hat was probably half a skein. I'm so glad you like the pattern :)

  6. Hi! so when you are on Round 6, making the 4 dc between the cables, does that 4 go past your next fptrc, and you kind of have to go back to get to it? hope that makes sense?

    1. You have it exactly right. You'll dc in the next 4 dc and one of those is behind the fpdc you'll do next. This is how you increase it :)

  7. I am hung up on round 4. How many sc do you count over to know where to place the 2 dc between braided cable stitches? I was allowing for 5 but it didn't come out right at the end of the round.

    1. With round four, you'll start your double crochet stitches in the st next to your last cable st. Your next cable st gets worked over them in a sense. So, whatever 2 sc are next, double crochet into them and then do your front post stitches like normal. Does this make sense?

  9. Ian in uk is the yarn a chunky aran or dk

  10. Does the hat come out really thick with the ridge behind iam making in chunky

    1. I have no idea how it comes out in chunky. The pattern calls for worsted weight. Chunky is going to change the gauge, size of the hat and ultimately how it looks and feels. I'd love to see how it turns out once you're done though!

  11. Also what uk yarn would this redheart love be

    1. I'm not sure. I do know that red heart love is a worsted weight (think medium) - it isn't thin or chunky. If you give me a link to some UK yarn stores, I could tell you the one that looks the closest. Or if you are in crochet groups, some people in there might have a better answer!

  12. The pattern is beautiful. I have no experience working with gauge however, so I'm a bit confused. Are the stitches worked in a line, making it an inch long; or are the rounds worked on the dbl crochets, making it an inch square?

    1. I have give you a link to some great info on gauge, and if it doesn't answer all of your questions just look to the right of the screen and you'll see even more links about gauge! (if you don't see it right away, just scroll down until you see gauge mentioned)

  13. Is there a twist in the cowl before stitching together? I stitched right side together without a twist and can not get it to look right on.

    Replies
    1. Nope, no twist. A twist can easily happen when sewing it together though. It's really hard for me to figure out what you might have done without seeing it though.

  14. I cannot figure out round 4 of the beanie. I either end up with to many stitches or half way through the braid. I have double checked and re-counted my stitches over and over again.

    1. Round 4 is the trickiest and once you do figure it out, the rest is cake.

You're welcome to e-mail me some pictures of what you're doing and I'll see if I can help you figure it out.

    1. The chain does not count as a stitch when working up the hat :)

  16. Really cute and considering making this for my best friend. What's the weight of the yarn though? Thanks!

  17. Hi! I'm making this hat right now, it's awesome, I think it's a little bit small, i'm at round 10, i think, i didn't count it. I' use red heart detroit yarn, with a 5.0 mm hook. Could you help me, if i have to ad more rows? Thank you! :)
