Winter Ain’t Over Yet
Hooded Cowl
Before I get to the pattern of this, I wanted to share its inspiration particularly since it is my first cowl design. Here in Colorado, the weather had turned really nice. My family and I had started going on daily bike rides, playing outside and we were just in love with the warming weather. The rising tempertures inspired me to come out with my Ribbed Sun Hat design and my Spring Time Booties design. Then, we got snow flakes the size of small hail and the warm weather was gone. With snow on the ground, I decided to create this cowl because, well... Winter Ain't Over Yet!!

Tips & Hints
-
When you start the hood the rows of dc/sc will
be slightly different because you are not working in the round. Instead of
putting the dc behind the ch like you do with the cowl, you will put it in
front of the ch. This is because after the first row of dc, ch 1, skip next st
that you do in the first row of the hood, you have to turn so you have to do
the “opposite” of what you were doing for that particular row. When you are
done the hood and cowl should match on the inside and outside, if the hood
looks inside out double check this step.
-
To make just the cowl, disregard the hood
instructions.
-
To make a thicker cowl, repeat two rounds in
each color once more. This will give you two more rounds with color A and color
B and add a couple of inches to the cowl.
-
The fun look of this cowl is arrived at by the
bottom of the dc peaking through the ch 1 sp, that is why making sure you go behind
the ch 1 and then in front of the ch one are so essential.
-
In the fourth round (and all of its repeats),
you are putting a dc in the first st of the previous round as if it were a
skipped stitch even though it already has a stitch in it. You will go in front
of it as if it were a ch 1 sp so that it shows like it is peaking through the
space between it and the other dc.

Do you have a picture of the back of the hood or how it looks when not on the head?
ReplyDeleteI don't have a picture of how it looks when it isn't on but I do have one of the back of it! I added that image to Ravelry - just go to this link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/winter-crystals-hooded-cowl
